The kick down (passing) worked and it did downshift. Doing a more moderate acceleration the shift points were 15-20mph, 25-30mph and 40-45mph. HMMM, seems the tranny is shifting a little too low. It should shift above 45 into OD. The torque converter afterwards. It seems the vacuum is locking in the torque converter too early. My rebuild had a weak 2/3 shift. I don't know why. A tranny guy raised the line pressure. The 2/3 shift is now firmer and 4Th kicks in at 50-55 MPH.

If the car is moving at all-even 10 mph-they'll kick down to 2nd, but not low. TransGo and B&M make shift kits and governor weight kits to solve this. Even on later cars with AOD trannys like a 700R4-these kits will give you automatic kickdown to low gear and a full-throttle upshift to 4th. My pal with the 454 pickup grenaded the Rat one day.
In Tow/Haul Mode, the shift points in your automatic transmission are changed and the throttle response is increased for smoother starts and better acceleration under full load. Tow/Haul Mode holds lower gears longer while accelerating or decelerating, and for increased engine braking control.

Meaning, I like to get the MPH variable satisfied so that the TCM just waits for the RPM to hit and then bang (remember, 2 variables needed, RPM and MPH) A good 4-5 or so below actual MPH is a good buffer for MPH variables.

Jun 19, 2010 · If the line rise is good, then put softer springs in the govenor. This should raise the shift points. If the shift points are raised, but not enough, grind the weights off or install a vette govenor and try that. The govenor springs can be cut off a little too. If that does not work, you need a stiffer spring in the 3-4 shift valve.
At one point at hiway speed, pressing on accelerator to pass another vehicle, all of a suddend tranny starts to Surge on me, did that a few times then stopped. Just bought a '89 Chevy S-10 pickup that has a 350 V8 and 700R4 transmission. The transmission shifts at relatively high engine speeds during normal driving. Suspect the previously owner may have been setting up the truck for drag racing. Are the shift points controlled by the valve body? How can the shift points be lowered for daily driving?
The 700R4 is not an electronic version but it does need a circuitry to control the lockup of the converter. The general descriptions I have read state : lockup will take place above some 40 mph with the engine temp above some 60 C.

Oct 04, 2010 · I've had a Transgo HD shift kit in it for some time with aluminum accumulator pistons, and 4th gear hold servo. I had a 'vette 2-4 servo in it before, but didn't like the harsh 1-2 shift. That was before the stall converter. Probably wouldn't be an issue with my PT3200. I currently have all shift times set to 0.00.

Going by what TCI suggests, your 1-2 shift should occur around 15-20 MPH, 2-3 25-30 MPH and 3-4 40-45 MPH. Not sure what that is in Kilometers but hopefully this helps. Also I'm running a 3.73 rear end gear and it cruises at 70 MPH at 2,100 RPM.

Based on their information, I purchased the transmission/convertor and installed them. The transmission wouldn't shift 1/2 - 2/3 - 3/OD until the rpm reached about 2800 which means that if you're driving in traffic, creeping along at about 20 to 30 mph, the trans wouldn't not shift. When it did change gears, it would nearly break your neck.

With the 700r4 I found the weights changed the 1-2 shift speeds more and the springs the 2-3 shift. I was also able to use the adjustable TV setup to dial in where I wanted the part throttle shifts in normal driving.

For lower shift points at wide-open throttle install stronger springs. After the cable is adjusted the approximate shift points should be 15 to 18, 25 to 30 and 40 to 50 MPH at very light throttle depending on tire size and axle ratio. Light throttle shift points are measured in MPH and full throttle shift points are measured at what RPM.
